Renowned for being home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, the Algarve is regularly voted as the best beach destination in Europe. Here are the top 25 beaches we have chosen for you to take a look at and soak up as much sun as you’d like:

 

 

1. PRAIA DA ILHA DE CABANAS ⚑

Found on Cabana island, this beach does require a water taxi to get to it. The cruise across the river is great fun for all, although the children seem to enjoy it most! When on the other side, a short stroll will bring you to the main beach where you can find a beach bars which provide drinks, snacks and ice creams.

 

2.PRAIA DA ILHA DE ARMONA

The Ria Formosa Natural Park is an outstanding piece of natural beauty itself, but if you take a look within you will come across a small beautiful island called Armona. Accessed via a ferry with regular trips scheduled throughout the day for a reasonable price, the island is approximately one kilometre wide providing a real shipwreck experience all year round.

 

3. PRAIA DE TAVIRA ⚑

The beach on Tavira island is known for being one of the five official naturist beaches in Portugal. You need to catch a ferry from the little port just outside Tavira to get to the island.

 

4. PRAIA DO BARRIL ⚑

Praia do Barril is situated on the island of Tavira and is certainly one of the most relaxing beaches in the Algarve with its white sand and clear blue sea.

 

5. PRAIA DE MANTA ROTA ⚑

Praia de Manta Rota is in the bay of Monte Gordo, found in Vila Real de Santo António. A broad sand line invites you to play football, volleyball, rugby, or make sandcastles and fly a kite. A great bonus - when the tide is low, you can walk for miles and miles in the sea before you need to swim, making it a superb beach for small children.

 

6. PRAIA DA FUSETA ⚑

Praia da Fuseta is on Fuseta’s Island, which separates the Ria Formosa Natural Reserve from the Atlantic Ocean. This beautiful island enjoys a high quality ocean and when the waters get rough it’s the perfect setting for surfing.

 

7. PRAIA DO FAROL ⚑

This beach can be found on Ilha do Farol (Island of the Lighthouse), named because of Cabo de Santa Maria’s Lighthouse which was built on the island in 1851 and is known as one of the quietest beaches on the Algarve.

 

8. PRAIA FORTE NOVO

Forte Novo beach can be found on the Eastern side of Quarteira and covers an extensive area. With low cliffs and a much quieter vibe than most beaches on the Algarve it is popular among the locals. It also has a variety of bars and restaurants to choose from when looking for a picturesque sunset dinner.

 

9. PRAIA DA MARINHA ⚑

Marinha beach is considered to be not only one of the top ten most beautiful beaches in Europe, but it ranks as one of the hundred best in the world. Situated on the coast between Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra, this beach is one of the gems of the Algarve and boasts golden sands, clear blue waters and some of the most amazing cliffs and rock formations.

 

10. PRAIA DE VALE DO LOBO ⚑

For a taste of the rich life, head down to Vale do Lobo beach located within the heart of the Golden Triangle. This beach is equipped with a number of famous restaurants, along with plenty of sunbeds for those who prefer not to sit on the sand and even a massage station for a touch of relaxation.

 

11. PRAIA DA GALÉ ⚑

A hidden treasure found just  four kilometres away from Albufeira, Praia da Galé provides a pleasant escape from some of the more crowded beaches on the southern coast. Surrounded by rock formations and nature, it creates a beautiful ambience which needs to be experienced first hand.  

 

12. PRAIA DA FALÉSIA ⚑

Characterised by incredible red cliffs, Praia da Falésia is one of the most popular beaches on the Algarve and understandably why. With an expanse of golden sands covering more than 6km it provides a great place for a family day out, or for relaxing day soaking up the glorious sunshine!

 

13. PRAIA DO VALE DE CENTEANES ⚑

Found in Lagoa, Praia do Vale de Centeanes is a magnificent beach backed by imposing, deeply eroded cliffs and at the bottom of these cliffs you can see caves which have been cut out by the ocean. It is a great beach for those who enjoy long walks.

 

14. PRAIA DOS ALEMÃES ⚑

Another example of a blue flag beach on the Algarve, Praia dos Alemães enjoy a more natural setting than some of the beaches to the west. With fewer buildings and smaller cliffs it is a great beach to explore.

 

15. PRAIA DA ROCHA ⚑

Recognised as one of the Algarves iconic beaches, Praia da Rocha is situated in Portimão and is an extremely popular beach among both residents and holidaymakers. Sheltered by warm colour cliffs the beach stretches on for over one kilometre and offers various different water-sports including surfing, along with boat trips, cafes and restaurants.  

 

16. PRAIA GRANDE ⚑

Located between Carvoeiro and Ferragudo, Praia Grande borders both the Atlantic Ocean and the River Arade resulting in gentle waves year round. It is also equipped with a small park on the beach, providing a great spot for families to take their children for a fun fueled day out!

 

17. PRAIA DO ANCÃO ⚑

Found on the Western side of the Ria Formosa lagoon system, and accessed through Vale de Lobo/Quinta do Algarve, Praia do Ancão is one of the nicest beaches on the Algarve due to its extensive size. With nicely integrated support infrastructures it is a great place to enjoy a beach picnic while contemplating the Atlantic Ocean.  

 

18. MEIA PRAIA ⚑

Known as another one of the longest beaches on the Algarve, coming in at around four a half kilometres, Meia Praia is an extremely popular location among locales and holidaymakers all year round. Offering a relatively calm sea due to the rock formations of Ponte da Piedade, these protect the beach against waves from the southwest making it an ideal location for families with small children.

 

19. PRAIA DO CAMILO  ⚑

Sharing the same golden sands and crystal clear waters as its neighbouring beach, Praia do Camilio is Lagos’ iconic beach. Accessing the beach involves taking the wooden steps which wind their way down the orange cliffs, the same ones which offer shelter from the ocean winds. Resulting in a safe and secure location for swimming in the ocean.

 

20. PRAIA DONA ANA ⚑

Extremely popular with its cove surrounded by colourful cliffs and clear waters, Praia Dona Ana is one of the most photographed beaches in the Algarve, commonly found on many postcards and billboards promoting the region. Additionally, The bizarre cliffs and rocks that surround this beach offer fantastic landscapes that have long inspired painters from all over the world.

 

21. PRAIA DA ARRIFANA ⚑

Hugely popular among surfers, bodyboarders and swimmers, Praia da Arrifana is in a beautiful cove shaped like a shell and offers more than 700m of gloriously soft sand. Surrounded by imposing black cliffs, to the south it looks as though a dark and narrow lioness is emerging from the ocean and a panoramic view of the Arrifana Fortress is a spectacular sight, even if it is in ruins.

 

22. PRAIA DE ODECEIXE ⚑

Described as a “wide sandy tongue” situated between the ocean and a stream, Praia de Odeceixe was chosen as one of the seven most beaches in Portugal. Due to the absence of buildings and construction nearby, it is considered a little heaven still untouched by Man. Strolls along the river bank and canoe riders are permitted on the river.

 

23. PRAIA DA AMOREIRA ⚑

With impressive rock formations, Praia da Amoreira offers a breath-taking landscape and with two imposing shapes marking the area, it is easily recognisable. The black cliff to the north resembles a giant lying on the seas, and to the south is where you will find the rock formations which are vestiges of an old dune that is now fossilised.

 

24. PRAIA DE MONTE CLÉRIGO ⚑

Comprised of fine golden sand and gently sloping cliffs, Praia de Monte Clérgio offers a cosier feel than some of the other beaches in the Algarve with its high cliffs on one side, and a charming little village filled with pink and white houses on the other. As another winner of a blue flag in Portugal, this beach is both clean and well equipped for all.

 

25. PRAIA DA BORDEIRA ⚑

Considered one of the largest beaches on the Algarve during low tide, Praia da Bordeira is a stunning, and often deserted, beach found ten kilometres north of Praia de Castlejo. Providing consistent swells it is a massive hit with surfers, even drawing many from out of town.
