Portugal’s Popularity Soars as Tennis Fans Flock to the Count

While the UK is preparing for Wimbledon once again, Portugal’s popularity is soaring, as tennis fans flock to the country.

Although the event is distinctly English, sporty tourists and second homebuyers are seeking out the best facilities overseas, particularly in Portugal’s Algarve.

Chris White, the Founding Director of boutique estate agent Ideal Homes Portugal, observes that it’s not just the professionals who get excited as Wimbledon approaches, but holiday home owners too.

He says: “We see a lot of excitement from buyers about homes in the Algarve sunshine that include their own tennis courts or are near to tennis centres and academies at this time of year. The Algarve’s 300 days of sunshine per year mean that it’s a great place to practise the sport, with a long season that’s perfect for honing your skills.”

Recent research has found that Portugal is the number one overseas destination for increasing popularity from UK tourists. The ABTA travel association found that bookings to Portugal have soared by 29%, beating Spain’s 26% growth and Cyprus’ 18%.

A former Dragons’ Den star, Duncan Bannatyne, and his fellow dragon Peter Jones are both keen tennis players who have recently enjoyed a week of honing their on-court skills at a tennis centre in Portugal. The pair visited the Val de Lobo resort, best known for its stunning golf courses, which boasts top quality tennis facilities. More than one international tennis stars also own a home in the area.

Bannatyne purchased his own luxury Algarve villa through Ideal Homes Portugal in 2014. Those hoping to do the same, and take advantage of the area’s fantastic tennis facilities, have a wide range of options available to them.
