A fresh look at Spain’s Costa Blanca!

A fresh look at Spain’s Costa Blanca!

When you think of Spain and particularly Costa Blanca, does an image of towering buildings, overcrowding and mass commercial tourism comes to mind? As with most things in life, there is more to the Costa Blanca than meets the eye.

Many are amazed to find that Costa Blanca (or ‘White Coast’ as it literally translates) has a diverse range of sights and experiences to impress even the most discerning of travellers and in fact, really does have something for everyone. Whether you are two or ninety-two, Costa Blanca will delight!

Here you will find mountains and valleys, lakes and parks, castles and old towns, flamenco and tapas, waterparks and aquariums and a whole lot more! Not to mention over 120 miles of beautiful coastline and around 320 days of glorious sunshine a year (which for us raintrodden, grey-skied, umbrella laden British people is a huge enticement in itself!).

Here are a list of 10 interesting places / things to do in Costa Blanca (in no particular ranking order):

1. Pink Salt Lake, Torrevieja ( Las Salinas de Torrevieja). A unique sight which, according to local legend, has huge health benefits for those with arthritis and health issues such as asthma. You can find out more by listening to the commentary from the guide whilst travelling to the lake via the land train in Torrevieja.

2. Island of Tabarca. Take a boat trip from Santa Pola or Alicante to the small and tranquil island of Tabarca. Renowned as a place for smugglers and pirates to shelter due to the number of coves and caves, there are lovely spots for snorkelling and many restaurants offering delicious seafood.

3. Canelobre Caves, Busot. A perfect place to visit on a hot day to cool down, or on a cloudy day to entertain the family. Enter the underground world of enchanting colours, lights and rock formations where you can enjoy the strange sight of stalactites and stalagmites while listening to the fascinating history from the official guide. Please note sturdy footwear is necessary and flash photography is not permitted.

4. Castle of Biar, Biar. Small but spectacular, and with just one euro you can enter the tower and obtain a free map. If you are a culture vulture and enjoy rich history, then this castle is for you. Especially if you enjoy beautiful views as from here you can overlook the town below making the steep climb up the tower more than worthwhile.

5. Puig Campana , Finestrat. This beautiful mountain peaks at 1406 metres and is not for the faint-hearted, with walking boots, a bottle (or two) of water, a camera and phone being the essential items for a hike up this natural beauty. The views are spectacular and the mountain has two peaks and various paths to choose from. Hiking guides can be purchased from the tourism office in Finestrat.

6. Guadalest Valley,  Marina Baixa. A place of outstanding natural beauty, perfect for tranquility and relaxation. Breathtaking views and the turquoise reservoir is stunningly bright on a clear, sunny day. Plenty of local shops to explore can be found in the area, so make sure you take some spending money for some special souvenirs for friends or family. You can access this valley via a guided tour or by hiring a car and making your own way there.

7. Aquopolis Torrevieja Waterpark, Torrevieja. For a fun day out for the whole family, why not visit the Costa Blanca’s largest waterpark. With a selection of rides and attractions for all ages and levels of bravery, everyone is guaranteed to have a splash-tastic time!

8. La Guitarreria Tablao Flamenco, Alicante Old Town. The word Flamenco elicits a powerful image of multiple dancers and a large stage type performance, but for those who have never experienced a ‘tablao’  performance, it is a must! This type of performance is very rustic and intimate often performed with just two to three people with a small audience. For ten euros you can have one drink and watch the show. Many have described this show as emotional and gripping. It is the only Tablao show in Alicante, making it highly sought after so it is recommended that you book online to ensure you get to experience it.

9. Local Market at Pilar de la Horadara. There are various local markets in the Costa Blanca where you can find an array of fresh fruit and produce, as well as traditional and modern clothing, accessories and trinkets. This particular one is held every Friday morning in the centre of the village near the post office and the library. Make sure you head on over to sample the flavours and hustle and bustle of local life.

10. Mundomar Benidorm (Aquarium with Dolphins). A fantastic and entertaining sea life aquarium where you and the family are able to enjoy swimming with dolphins first hand. A superb day out for the whole family with a selection of sea life and animals.
