The Portuguese love of food has begun to well and truly put this country on the map, with the world noticing more and more just how special Portuguese gastronomy really is.

The Algarve has just won another two Michelin stars, to reward the excellence of its restaurants. Newcomers to the list are Restaurant Vista, by young chef João Oliveira, at the Hotel Bela Vista in Praia da Rocha, and Gusto by Heinz Beck, one of the restaurants in the Conrad Algarve, in Quinta do Lago.

The two Algarve stars are the only additions for Portugal, as part of the presentation of the 2018 edition of the most famous and influential gastronomic guide in the world, which has just been announced in Tenerife.

With these new award winners, Portugal will add a total of 23 restaurants distinguished by the Michelin guide, five of them with two stars and eight located in the Algarve. Vila Joya, by Dieter Koschina, and Hans Neuner's Ocean, at the Vila Vita maintain their two stars, while the rest of the Algarve - Bon Bon, by chef Rui Silvestre in Carvoeiro, Henrique Leis , by Henrique Leis, and São Gabriel, by Leonel Pereira, both in Almancil, and Willie's by Willie Wurger in Vilamoura, continuing with one star. To these, Vista and Gusto are now joined, with a star each.

João Oliveira aged just 30, is the chef at Vista, located on Praia da Rocha. Who since last year expected their first Michelin star, thanks to their creative and consistent quality, inspired by the Algarve and the Mediterranean. Oliveira arrived at the Vista restaurant in early 2015, to take up the position of Executive Chef, after having worked with some of the greatest talents of national gastronomy. For 13 years he was Sous-Chef to Ricardo Costa, at the Michelin-starred The Yeatman in Porto, and more recently, he moved to the Vila Joya with its two Michelin stars.

Heinz Beck is already an old acquaintance of the Michelin guide, since for more than a decade he has three stars in his restaurant in Rome, La Pergola at the Hotel Cavalieri, and one more star, the latter in London Apsley's at the Lanesborough Hotel. And now another star at the Gusto restaurant at the Conrad Algarve.

Portugal's newest stars show how very far this little country has come, and just how far it is yet to go. Not only is it the world's leading tourist destination, but now raising its profile as a top international destinations for gastronomy as well.
