Ready to say good-bye to 2018 and bring in 2-0-1-9!? 

Will you be at a party somewhere cosy and familiar or thinking this year you need a side of adventure and exploring new things, places, foods, people...?  If an exciting 'away from the norm' is on your agenda we suggest you head to the Algarve and book your New Year's holiday! In case you've never spent New Year's in Southern Portugal we're confident you won't be disappointed! 

Aside from great weather you have options, lots of options. Chose 'Painting the Town Red' on New Year’s Eve with one of the many parties happening across the region, select from elegant black-tie dinner parties, or all-night parties taking you into the wee, wee morning hours of 2019! 

If choosing a refined entry into the new year there are more Michelin starred restaurants than ever before, and if you can't afford Michelin meals, no problem! Food is serious business in Portugal and you'll still have access to hundreds of restaurants serving some of the world's best seafood and wines! 

When dinner is over you can choose to sip champagne or Portuguese espumante where you are, or join thousands from across Portugal and those who travelled from abroad, beach side to watch a fireworks spectacle.   • Twelve raisins - A great and long running Portuguese tradition is to eat 12 raisins upon the clock striking midnight. As the clock strikes 12 times, you'll eat the raisins one by one, which represent the 12 months to come. Their belief is that this will bring you prosperity and good luck with the new year. No matter where you are: a Portuguese bar, restaurant etc., a bowl of raisins will be found at tables with people digging in the closer to midnight it gets. You have to be quick or there will be none left!
  • Money - For the more superstitious, the Portuguese believe if you have no money in your pockets when heading into the new year, it results in you having no money for the whole year! Best fill your pockets with plenty of cash ensuring you have a great year and an even better night out, but it will come in handy when you come back to the Algarve on holiday, or for something more permanent...
  • Dip in the ocean - More a New Year’s Day tradition, the Portuguese will head down to the closest beach and go running into the ocean, even though it may be a cold winter day! Proving great for a hangover if you've got one, but if you're not that adventurous you may want to go ocean side just to watch the fun, or maybe partake in the tradition of wearing white and sending flowers into the ocean. Either way, having sand at your feet and an ocean view is a great way also to get over the ills from the festivities of the night before...
