Kids Calling The Shots On Family Holidays

Who decides where you go on holiday in your house? Mum or Dad? Does the decision revolve around older and less able members of the family? Or even around four legged favourites?

New research reveals that 70% of parents consult their children before settling on a destination for their annual holiday. Given that the study also found 90% of parents put their kids before themselves when it comes to holiday happiness, this doesn’t come as a big surprise.

Generational expert Dr. Paul Redmond highlighted that Gen-Z children, born between the mid-nineties and early 2000s, have an important impact on the travel industry. He said: “For the travel industry, Generation Z is an incredibly important cohort. Not only do they exert a powerful influence on their Generation X parents, who are extremely tuned into their well-being and personal development, but they are a generation that care more for experiences than possessions.”

The research comes from Royal Caribbean International, which has recently created its first Gen-Z expert panel or ‘Little Extraordinaires’ who will shape the future of the cruise line’s holiday packages. Asked to pinpoint what makes a good holiday, the group of seven to eleven year olds highlighted exploring new cultures, remote controlled waterslides, ice cream and unicorns! They also emphasised activities like rock climbing and Thai boxing.

According to the cruise line, these should all be taken into consideration when designing future holidays (even unicorns).

Something for everyone in Portugal
Despite consulting their children during the decision process, over 40% of parents admitted to ignoring their advice and choosing to jet off elsewhere – only to regret it later!

If your kids suggest Portugal for the upcoming school holidays, we’d have to agree (not that we’re biased!). The great thing about Portugal is that it truly has something for everyone. You could spend a week on the Algarve enjoying the beaches and soaking up the sunshine, where there are water parks, mini golf play areas and dolphin watching experiences for the kids and wine tasting, world-class golf courses and sumptuous sea food for the grown-ups!

Alternatively, you could hire a car and turn your holiday into a road trip, starting in the Algarve and making your way to Lisbon or even Porto. Lisbon has a zoo, an oceanarium, cable cars and classic trams which kids love to ride through the narrow cobbled streets. There are also plenty of bakeries to keep their bellies full of tasty treats! In fact, you might all love Portugal so much that you decide to buy a holiday home which you can enjoy as a family for years to come.

A second home in the sun makes a wonderful retreat when you need a break, but it’s also a brilliant investment! Rent your apartment, townhouse or villa to pay off the mortgage – or line your pension pots if you bought the property outright. Any income generated from your Portugal property could also go towards university fees and other big expenses your kids might need help with in the future.
