Air Bridge Confirmed Between Portugal and UK!

Portugal has officially been introduced to the air travel corridor list for the UK meaning anyone travelling to the country will not have to quarantine when they return to the UK.

 

Grant Schapps, UK secretary of State for Transport, mentioned in a tweet on Twitter that the “Data also shows we can now add Portugal to those countries INCLUDED in Travel Corridors. As with all air bridge countries, please be aware that things can change quickly. Only travel if you are content to unexpectedly 14-day quarantine if required (I speak from experience!)”

 

After a lot of anticipation this is great news for Portugal and is the news many across the UK have been waiting to hear for weeks.

 

It is also the news many businesses across the country, and the Algarve in particular, have been waiting to hear as the British contribute massively towards the tourism sector and the impact of not having as many here this summer has been felt severely, especially in the Algarve.

 

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the President of Portugal, had been lobbying the UK on their decision to not put Portugal on the list relentlessly and major news outlet The Portugal New has also been campaigning for the air bridge between the UK and Portugal. 

 

 

So far they had been able to collect over 31,000 signatures since July and were encouraging their readers in the UK to lobby their local MPs to reverse the decision made. 

 

It seems their efforts combined paid off today as many celebrated once the announcement was made that Portugal had finally been named. 

 

“From 0400 hours on 22 August 2020, passengers arriving in the UK from Portugal (including the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores) will no longer need to self-isolate, so long as they have not been in, or transited through any other non-exempt countries in the fourteen days preceding their arrival. Passengers arriving in the UK before that deadline will be required to complete the full 14 day self-isolation period.” This is a statement sent from the British Embassy in Lisbon to the Portugal News, highlighting when the news will take place. 

 

They continued, “All travellers arriving in the UK, including those from exempt destinations, will still be required to show a complete passenger locator form on arrival into the UK, unless they fall into a small group of exemptions. UK travel advice restrictions to mainland Portugal have been removed with immediate effect”.

 

“The British Embassy wishes to thank the Portuguese authorities for their constructive cooperation in recent weeks, including regularly providing updated figures on the evolution of the virus in Portugal,” concluded the statement.
