Receiving the accolade at the World Travel Awards in November 2019, Portugal beat off stiff competition from other world-renowned tourist destinations such as Dubai, USA and Brazil. Now in their 26th year, the awards are nicknamed “The Oscars of Tourism” and are fiercely contested by destinations, companies and official bodies from around the world.
Having beaten countries including France, Germany, Spain and Italy to the title of “Europe’s Leading Destination” at the European Travel Awards in June 2019, Portugal was put forward for the overall World Travel Awards. Competing against 21 other countries, it took the crown for the third year in a row at the ceremony in Oman.
